The Ben Sawyer Bridge Opens on a Published Federal Schedule
The Ben Sawyer Bridge carries SC 703 (Ben Sawyer Boulevard) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway between Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. It is a movable swing span with a central operator's house rather than a fixed high bridge. The original structure dates to 1945; its steel superstructure was replaced in a project carried out in 2009–2010, with the new swing span floated in on barges and set with hydraulic jacks.
Because it is a drawbridge, its openings are governed by federal regulation. Under 33 CFR 117.911, the Ben Sawyer (SR 703) draw — listed at Sullivan's Island Narrows, Intracoastal Waterway mile 462.2 — opens on signal, except that:
- Weekday rush periods: the draw need not open from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, except federal holidays.
- Weekends and federal holidays: from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. the draw need open only on the hour.
- Always: public vessels of the United States and tugs with tows are passed through the drawspan at any time on proper signal.
What that means for a service appointment on the island: on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, road traffic can be stopped by an on-the-hour opening. If an arrival window matters to you, the published schedule is the thing to check first.
The island's other road link is the H.L. Hunley Bridge, which carries SC 703 across Breach Inlet to Isle of Palms and connects onward to the Isle of Palms Connector (SC 517) and US 17. That alternative is relatively recent: until the Isle of Palms Connector opened in 1993, the Ben Sawyer Bridge was the only vehicular access to Sullivan's Island.
