Daniel Island's Geography — and Why It Was Farmland Until the 1990s
Daniel Island is a roughly 4,000-acre island bordered on the west by the Cooper River, on the east by the Wando River, and on the north by the connected Nowell and Beresford Creeks. It lies in Berkeley County but has been annexed by the City of Charleston, which is why a Daniel Island address is a Charleston address in a different county from most of the city.
The island stayed largely undeveloped far longer than its location would suggest. Purchased in 1947 by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, it was used for farming, cattle ranching and as a private hunting retreat, and remained that way until the construction of Interstate 526 in the early 1990s finally gave it a road connection.
