What the Manufacturers Themselves Publish About Replacement Glass

Luxury manufacturers do not leave this to interpretation. Several publish written position statements addressed to the repair industry, and they are the most useful thing an owner can read before authorising a windshield job, because they say in the maker's own words what the glass is doing.

Mercedes-Benz USA

MBUSA's position statement on replacement glass and glazing itemises what is built into the pane. It states that “solar glass coatings provide UV protection and heat load reduction” and that “aftermarket variants often do not have this reflective technology”; that genuine glass “can have special acoustic dampening technologies within the layering of the glass”; and — the line that matters most for calibration — that genuine glass “often incorporates various electrical components, including driver-assistance cameras, rain sensors, antennae, and heating elements.” It also notes that “glass components are also often a part of the vehicle structural assembly,” installed with “advanced adhesives specific to each model.”

Audi of America

Audi's position statement on windshield and glass replacement makes the same point in one sentence: “Audi auto glass plays an important role in the safety of the vehicle by providing structural rigidity, ocular clarity and integration with advanced vehicle technologies including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and heads-up display.” Audi of America “recommends the use of original equipment glass for replacement and Audi of America procedures for repair and replacement.”

The Standard Says the Same Thing

This is not only a manufacturer preference. ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022, the American National Standard for automotive glass replacement, requires that those doing the work “shall use glass products compatible with the ADAS which may be affected/impacted by the glass replacement.” Compatibility is a requirement of the replacement standard, not an upsell.

Why a Head-Up Display Windshield Is Wedge-Shaped — and Why the Camera Cares

A head-up display windshield is not ordinary glass with a coating added. The laminate between the two panes is deliberately wedge-shaped: the interlayer manufacturer Eastman describes its automotive HUD product as using a “variable angle wedge,” because without it the two glass surfaces reflect the projected image twice and the driver sees a second, offset copy. That artefact is called ghosting, and Eastman explains it arises “when separated planes of projection are in the near and far field zone with different focal points, requiring distinct wedge angles to meet specific ghosting requirements.” Augmented-reality displays make the problem harder still, because they can be “dual plane, when two sets of images are projected at different virtual image distances: near field and far field.”

Here is the part that connects HUD glass back to the safety systems. The same optical defect that produces a ghosted speed readout — transmitted double image — is, in Eastman's words, something that “can greatly impact the camera zone near the top of the windshield,” potentially compromising the camera-based collision warning and pedestrian detection functions that look through exactly that patch of glass. In other words, a windshield that is optically wrong for the display is, in the same stroke, optically wrong for the camera. Saint-Gobain Sekurit makes the same point from the calibration side: “cars are becoming increasingly ‘smarter’ as a result of the cameras and sensors that are often integrated onto the windscreen,” and calibration needs not only tools but “a high-quality windshield, with perfect shape, that will not distort vision, or misinterpret information.”

The other premium features on this page are built the same way, into the laminate rather than onto it. Acoustic glazing works by sandwiching a damping interlayer between the panes; Saint-Gobain Sekurit puts the effect of its acoustic interlayer at a 30% reduction in cabin noise level. Heat-reflecting glazing is a coating that, in the same manufacturer's description, reflects “both infra-red and UV rays” so the cabin heats up more slowly and the air conditioning works less. A pane's specification is not something you can reliably infer from the model name, which is why it has to be read off the build — and why it is worth telling whoever quotes the job whether your car has a display projected onto the glass, a rain sensor, or a heated windshield.
