What American Honda's Position Statement Says
American Honda publishes a position statement titled "Driver Assist / Safety Systems May Fail Unless OE Parts Used." Revised in June 2018, it is short, blunt, and the clearest published explanation of why Honda glass selection is not interchangeable.

- Which systems and from when: Honda writes that many Honda and Acura models beginning in 2013 use one or more of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM).
- Where the sensors are: "These systems either use a camera that is mounted behind the rearview mirror or a combination of that camera and a radar unit mounted in the front bumper or grille."
- Why the glass matters: "Installing anything other than an original equipment replacement windshield may cause these systems to work abnormally. Specifically, the camera will not be able to aim properly."
The Head-Up Display Trap
Honda flags a failure mode you cannot see coming. Beginning in 2014, some Honda and Acura models came with a head-up display, and the windshield for those cars is specially designed to project the HUD image correctly. Fit a non-HUD windshield and, per Honda, the HUD may appear as a double image.
The catch is in Honda's next sentence: "There is no visual difference between an OE HUD windshield and a non-HUD windshield. Both will physically fit into the same space." Nothing looks wrong during the install — the problem only shows up when the driver switches the display on. Honda's stated remedy is to provide the vehicle's VIN when ordering parts, which is the only reliable way to tell the two apart.
Acoustic Glass: Honda's Statement Is About the Side Windows
Worth being precise here, because the two get blurred together. The acoustic glass Honda addresses in this position statement is acoustic front side door glass, which began appearing on some Honda and Acura trim levels in 2014 — not the windshield. Honda describes it as a sound insulation layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sandwiched between two layers of semi-tempered glass. It is thinner than conventional side glass, and, like a laminated windshield, it does not shatter the way ordinary tempered side glass does. Honda again asks for the VIN when ordering, and notes that fitting non-OE side glass may reduce the car's cabin-noise isolation.
The Camera Is Not the Only Sensor
Honda's statement is a useful reminder that a Honda's forward-looking safety systems can straddle two locations. Beginning with the 2014 model year for Acura and the 2015 model year for Honda, certain models use a millimeter wave radar unit mounted in the front grille area for CMBS. On the Honda CR-V, that unit senses through the grille emblem, and those parts are specifically designed to avoid interfering with the radar. Honda states that installing the wrong grille parts will bring on the CMBS indicator and set DTC P2583-97 — dust or dirt on the millimeter wave radar. Glass work does not touch that radar, but it explains why a CMBS warning after body repair is not automatically a windshield problem.
Honda's position statement does not publish a static-or-dynamic calibration answer covering every model; the applicable procedure depends on the vehicle's year, trim and equipment, which is what the VIN establishes.
