Subaru EyeSight — Why It's Different
EyeSight uses two cameras, not one. This dual-camera setup mimics human binocular vision, allowing EyeSight to judge distance and dimension more accurately than single-camera systems. But this sophistication comes with a cost: EyeSight is extremely sensitive to camera alignment.
Subaru explicitly states that EyeSight must be recalibrated after windshield replacement. Driving with uncalibrated EyeSight can result in:

What Subaru Publishes About EyeSight and Windshield Replacement
Subaru of America has put its answer in writing, in a position statement addressed to the repair industry. It is short, it is public, and it is worth reading before you book any shop. In the April 2020 revision Subaru states that “if windshield glass replacement is performed on a Subaru vehicle equipped with EyeSight, calibration is required after the windshield is replaced,” and directs the installer to “always perform the ‘Inspection’ and ‘Adjustment and check’ of the stereo camera after windshield glass replacement” by reference to the applicable Service Manual. Note what that last phrase means in practice: Subaru does not publish one universal recipe. The procedure is looked up for your specific vehicle, so the right question to ask a shop is which procedure they will follow, not whether they own a target board.
Subaru's Stated Position on Replacement Glass
- Subaru “strongly recommend[s] that Subaru genuine windshield glass specially designed for EyeSight always be used,” and says only Subaru genuine glass has been tested and certified by Subaru to work with the EyeSight system.
- The reason Subaru gives is optical, not cosmetic: with other glass, “visibility of the camera may be compromised or any distortion in the glass may prevent the correct measurement of an object.” A stereo system infers distance by comparing two images, so an optical difference between the two sight lines is a measurement error rather than a blemish.
- Subaru also warns that if genuine glass is not used, “it may affect the ability of the EyeSight system to be properly calibrated.” In Subaru's own account, then, the glass can affect the calibration itself — not merely the view through the pane.
- Subaru states that aftermarket or substitute structural, body, mechanical or electrical repair parts are not covered under any Subaru warranty or Subaru Added Security agreement. That is a coverage question worth raising with whoever writes your estimate.
Subaru has held this line consistently: the same three points — calibration required, Inspection and Adjustment-and-check performed afterward, genuine EyeSight glass strongly recommended — appear in both the May 2017 and the April 2020 revisions of the statement.
EyeSight Is a Family Name — Your Year and Trim Decide the Hardware
Treat “EyeSight” as a brand rather than a part number. Subaru of America's own announcement of the 2023 Outback headlines the “Latest version of EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology with Wide-Angle Mono Camera” — a phrase that only makes sense because earlier versions exist, with different hardware behind the mirror.
That release is also explicit about who received the new camera, and it is not the whole model line. Subaru's press material for the 2023 Outback states: “The top-level Touring adds a Wide-Angle Mono Camera that works with the dual-camera EyeSight system. The additional camera expands the field of view even further to recognize pedestrians and bicycles sooner when the vehicle enters an intersection at low speed.” The debut announcement puts the same fact more bluntly — “a new Wide-Angle Mono Camera is added to Touring models” — against a 2023 line-up Subaru lists as Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited and Touring. Five of those six trims do not have it.
The practical consequence is worth spelling out, because it decides what glass is ordered: two Outbacks from the same model year can carry a different number of cameras behind the same mirror. So when you ask for a quote, give the year, the model and the trim, and the VIN if you have it in front of you. Glass and calibration are specified from the build, not from the badge on the tailgate.
