It is bonded to the painted body flange around the glass opening — the pinchweld — and the industry's American National Standard for glass replacement, ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022, defines minimum drive-away strength against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208 and 212. Whatever else salt air is doing to your car, it is working on the surface that bond depends on.
NASA runs its Beachside Atmospheric Corrosion Test Site at Kennedy Space Center on 900 feet of Atlantic beachfront, 200 feet from the mean high-tide line. ASM has documented it as one of the most corrosive naturally occurring environments there is, and NASA attributes that severity to four things acting together — ocean salt spray, heat, humidity and sunlight. Seabrook Island supplies all four. - Silicone and butyl are not a fix. Section 6.13 of the same standard allows only compatible polyurethane to seal an air or water leak in a polyurethane retention system, and Section 7.3 applies the same rule to a rubber gasket/polyurethane system. Both rule out silicone and butyl by name. A salt-air leak sealed with the wrong chemistry was not repaired.
