Common Windshield Damage at Wild Dunes

  • IOP Connector: The bridge from Mount Pleasant sees heavy beach traffic — sand, debris, and follow-too-close situations.
  • Highway 17: Connecting to Charleston proper. Truck traffic and construction debris.
  • Coastal Salt Air: While not a chip source, salt air can accelerate crack spreading. Address chips promptly.

What Vehicle Manufacturers Publish About Calibration After Glass Replacement

Whether a camera has to be recalibrated after a windshield is replaced is not a matter of opinion — the vehicle manufacturer publishes the requirement. Subaru of America's position statement on aftermarket windshield glass for EyeSight-equipped vehicles (May 2017) states plainly:

Subaru of America, Inc. — position statement, May 2017

“Additionally, if windshield glass replacement is performed on a Subaru vehicle equipped with EyeSight, calibration is required after the windshield is replaced.”

The same statement explains why the glass itself matters: only Subaru genuine windshield glass has been tested and certified by Subaru to work with EyeSight, and if other glass is used, “visibility of the camera may be compromised or any distortion in the glass may prevent the correct measurement of an object,” either of which would result in improper or incorrect EyeSight operation. Subaru also notes that using non-genuine glass may affect the system's ability to be properly calibrated at all.

Requirements differ by manufacturer and by model. I-CAR maintains an OEM Calibration Requirements Search that identifies, for a given year, make and model, whether calibration is required, where the cameras and sensors sit, and which events — such as removing the glass or replacing a camera — trigger the requirement. The correct answer for your vehicle comes from that manufacturer's own procedure, not from the age of the car.

Where Wild Dunes Sits on Isle of Palms

Wild Dunes occupies the northeastern end of Isle of Palms. The 900-acre development was established in 1975 by the Sea Pines Company as the Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club, on a barrier island separated from the mainland by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and lying about 15 miles by road east of downtown Charleston.

That position determines every drive to and from the resort. SC 703 runs the length of the island as Palm Boulevard and terminates at Palm Avenue and 41st Avenue, near the Isle of Palms Marina and Wild Dunes — so the last stretch of any trip is Palm Boulevard. Getting to the mainland means either the Isle of Palms Connector (SC 517), a 3.84-mile fixed-bridge route to US 17 in Mount Pleasant opened in 1993, or the older SC 703 route across Breach Inlet and Sullivan's Island, which includes the Ben Sawyer swing bridge and its federally set opening schedule.

Both of those are exactly the trips a mobile appointment removes from your day.
