What GM Publishes About Chevrolet Windshield Replacement
General Motors puts its windshield expectations in writing. GM's collision position statement on windshield replacement is a public document, and it is worth knowing what it says before glass is ordered for a Silverado, Equinox, Tahoe or any other Chevrolet.
Key Points in GM's Windshield Replacement Position Statement
- Aftermarket glass: GM writes that it "does not approve and strictly prohibits the use of aftermarket or non-GM Original Equipment (OE) glass for windshield replacement," because aftermarket glass may differ in material, dimensional and optical clarity specifications from what GM validated for the vehicle and its ADAS.
- What triggers calibration: GM states it is critical that a service point calibration or learn procedure is performed whenever a front view windshield camera or sensor is removed, reinstalled, or replaced — or when the windshield itself is removed and replaced. Reusing the original camera on a new windshield does not exempt the vehicle.
- Systems that depend on it: GM names Super Cruise, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist among the features that rely on precise calibration and integration with sensors and cameras embedded in or mounted near the windshield.
- Acoustic and solar layers: GM says many of its windshields include acoustic dampening to cut wind, road and engine noise, and are engineered to filter UV and infrared rays. Glass without those layers can raise both cabin noise and cabin temperature.
- Optical quality: GM says the optical quality of its windshields is tested to internal standards that go beyond Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 205, and that inferior glass may increase distortion in the driver's view.
GM's statement does not publish a single static-or-dynamic answer for every vehicle — it directs the reader to the service point procedure for that specific vehicle. Which procedure applies to your Chevrolet depends on model year, trim and which camera module is fitted, so the VIN is what settles it.
This is not a theoretical concern. In a February 2023 survey of nearly 500 drivers who had recently had crash-avoidance features repaired, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that about two-thirds of those whose repair involved a windshield replacement reported problems with the technology afterward. IIHS notes that automakers stipulate systems be calibrated any time a sensor is removed and replaced or reinstalled.
