ProPILOT Assist — Nissan ADAS Calibration

ProPILOT Assist is Nissan's hands-on driver assistance system. It combines adaptive cruise control with steering assist for highway driving. The system uses a camera behind the windshield to track lane markings and traffic — this camera requires calibration after windshield replacement.

Which Safety Shield 360 Features Actually Look Through the Windshield

Safety Shield 360 is six systems, and they do not all watch the same direction. Only some of them depend on what is mounted behind the glass, which is worth knowing when you are trying to work out what a windshield replacement touches on your car. In its October 2020 announcement, Nissan described the six as follows:

Nissan's Six Safety Shield 360 Systems

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection — Nissan describes this one as using forward-facing radar and camera technology to track vehicles and crossing pedestrians. It looks forward, through the glass.
  • Lane Departure Warning — alerts the driver when the vehicle drifts from its lane. Nissan's own footnote states it "only operates when lane markers can be detected," which is a forward-looking task.
  • High Beam Assist — switches to low beams "when it detects a vehicle ahead" and restores the high beams afterward. Also forward-looking.
  • Blind Spot Warning — watches beside the vehicle, not through the windshield.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert — warns of approaching vehicles when reversing out of a parking space.
  • Rear Automatic Braking — detects stationary objects behind the vehicle when backing up.

At the time of that announcement Nissan listed Safety Shield 360 as standard on the Sentra, LEAF, Maxima, Kicks, Rogue Sport and TITAN, and said it would also be standard on the 2021 Rogue. Availability on any given car still comes down to model year and trim, so the VIN is what confirms it.

What Nissan Publishes About Glass and Calibration

Nissan North America has two published collision position statements that bear directly on windshield work. One covers the glass itself; the other covers scanning and calibration.

Nissan's Glass Replacement Position (NPSB-16-606)

  • What the glass does: Nissan writes that genuine Nissan auto glass provides "structural rigidity, ocular clarity, and integration with advanced vehicle technology," and also contributes to noise dampening and UV protection.
  • Nissan's position on aftermarket glass: "Nissan North America DOES NOT support the use of aftermarket or recycled glass in a repair situation." Where an aftermarket windshield is unavoidable, Nissan asks that it meet the same specifications and similar quality as the OEM glass being replaced.
  • The rearview mirror catch: Nissan states that as of the 2016 model line-up, the LEAF, JUKE, Sentra and Quest all have non-reusable rearview mirrors — meaning a windshield replacement on those vehicles also requires the mirror to be replaced. That is a part to have on hand before the job starts, not a surprise at the end of it.

Nissan's Scanning and Calibration Position (NPSB/25-946)

  • Scanning threshold: Nissan states that all 2008 and newer Nissan vehicles require a pre- and post-repair diagnostic scan, noting that "simply disconnecting vehicle systems during repairs" is enough to warrant one.
  • Tooling: Nissan requires the CONSULT diagnostic scan tool with current software, and states plainly that it "does not test or validate other diagnostic scan tools in the market."
  • Targets: Nissan states that calibrations "should be performed using only the CONSULT software with only the approved Nissan targets and target systems and following the service manual procedures."

Neither statement publishes a single static-or-dynamic answer for the whole lineup; both send the reader to model-specific service information. Which procedure applies to a particular Rogue, Altima or Pathfinder depends on its year, trim and camera module.

The follow-through matters more than it sounds. In a February 2023 survey of nearly 500 drivers who had recently had crash-avoidance features repaired, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that about two-thirds of those whose repair involved a windshield replacement reported problems with the technology afterward.
