For Genesis vehicles, we recommend visiting our Luxury Vehicles page for detailed information on premium glass requirements and advanced calibration procedures.
What the Owner's Manuals Say About the Camera Behind Your Mirror
Both brands document the sensor in their own owner's manuals, and the wording is more specific than most drivers expect. Hyundai states plainly that “the front view camera is mounted near the top of the windshield inside your vehicle,” and Kia describes Lane Keeping Assist as “designed to detect the lane markers on the road with a front view camera on the windshield.” The camera is not merely near the glass; it looks through it. That is why the replacement and the calibration belong to the same job.
Hyundai's Published Cautions About the Front Windshield
- “Never install any accessories, stickers, or tint the front windshield.” Anything added in the camera's field of view is treated as an obstruction, not a decoration.
- “Always keep the camera dry,” and clean the lens only with a mild soap or neutral detergent — no acidic or alkaline cleansers.
- “Only have the detecting sensor replaced or repaired by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.”
- Hyundai also lists what degrades the camera short of any damage: temperature extremes around the camera itself, heavy rain, snow, fog, sudden changes in brightness, and low light. A system that behaves oddly in one of those conditions is not automatically a calibration fault.
The same feature name does not always mean the same hardware. Hyundai writes the sensor configuration into the manual heading itself: the 2025 Tucson's section is titled “Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (Sensor fusion),” and the detecting sensors it then lists are a front view camera and a front radar, across Basic, Junction Turning and Direct Oncoming functions. Read the heading in your own manual before assuming your car is wired like someone else's. Give the year, model, trim and VIN when you ask for a quote rather than the model name alone.
Kia's published ADAS guide is equally specific about operating limits, and those limits explain a common misunderstanding after a replacement. Lane Keeping Assist only engages once “the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 40 mph,” the system recognises the lane markers on both sides, and the car sits between them. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist becomes active above 5 mph and, per the guide, FCA and FCW “will not operate when the vehicle is traveling faster than approximately 45/50 mph, respectively.” A lap around a parking lot after the glass goes in cannot exercise lane keeping at all — it needs a marked road at highway speed. Kia's guide also covers features that have nothing to do with the windshield: Blind-Spot Collision Warning, for example, “uses radar sensors in the rear bumper.” The Drive Wise features documented in that guide are FCA, BCW, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, LKA, Lane Following Assist and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go — only some of which look through the glass.
