Auto Glass Insurance in South Carolina — Most Drivers Pay $0

South Carolina has one of the strongest windshield coverage laws in the country. Under SC Code § 38-77-280, insurance companies must waive your deductible for safety glass claims — whether your deductible is $250, $500, or $2,500. If you have comprehensive coverage on a vehicle registered in South Carolina, you almost certainly qualify for zero out-of-pocket windshield replacement.

How Zero-Deductible Glass Coverage Works in South Carolina

Most states let insurance companies apply your regular deductible to glass claims. South Carolina is different. State law specifically prohibits insurers from charging a deductible on safety glass repairs and replacements — as long as you meet three conditions.

The Three Requirements

  1. Your vehicle has a South Carolina license plate. This law only covers SC-plated vehicles. If your plate is from another state, you do not qualify — even if you live in South Carolina. Your coverage follows the laws of whatever state issued your plate.
  2. You have comprehensive coverage. Liability-only policies don't include glass. Comprehensive (sometimes called "full coverage" or "other than collision") is required.
  3. The damage applies only to safety glass. Windshield, side windows, rear window — all qualify. Sunroofs and moonroofs are sometimes excluded depending on your policy.

If you meet all three, your insurance may be required to cover the claim with no deductible.

Will Filing a Claim Raise My Rates?

This is the question we hear most often — and the answer is almost always no. Glass claims are classified as comprehensive claims, which insurers treat differently than collision claims. The best way to know if your rates will rise is to ask your insurance provider.

Do I Need to Call My Insurance Company First?

No — we make the insurance call for you. All we need from you is your name, VIN number, and insurance policy information. With those three things, we handle the entire claims process: we call your insurer, verify your coverage, file the claim, and collect payment directly. You don't need to file anything, call anyone, or wait for approval before scheduling.

Some customers prefer to call their insurer first — that's fine, but it's not required. Either way, the claim gets filed and you pay nothing.

What If My Insurance Wants Me to Use Someone Else?

Your insurer might suggest their "preferred" provider — usually Safelite. You're not required to use them. South Carolina law gives you the right to choose your own auto glass provider. We are an insurance approved vendor.

Is ADAS Calibration Covered Too?

Usually yes. Most insurance companies cover ADAS calibration as part of the windshield replacement claim — it keeps your vehicle's safety features operational and allows you to remain eligible for insurance safety discounts. We document the calibration requirement and include it in the claim.

When You Might Pay Out of Pocket

The zero-deductible law covers most drivers, but not everyone. Here are the situations where you'd pay for your own windshield:

  • Liability-only insurance: If you don't have comprehensive coverage, glass isn't covered at all. This is common on older vehicles where owners drop comprehensive to save on premiums.
  • Out-of-state registration: South Carolina's zero-deductible law only applies if your vehicle has a South Carolina license plate. If your plate is from another state, you do not qualify for SC's $0 deductible — even if you live here. Your glass coverage will follow the rules of whatever state issued your plate. For example, if you have North Carolina plates but live in Charleston, North Carolina's insurance laws apply to your claim, not South Carolina's. Call us and we'll help you figure out what your state covers.
  • Commercial auto policies: SC's zero-deductible law may not apply to commercial auto policies. If your vehicle is on a commercial policy, check with your insurer about your glass deductible terms.
  • Older policies with glass buyback provisions: Some older policies may include glass buyback endorsements — provisions that traded glass coverage for lower premiums. These are becoming less common as policies renew, but they still exist.

Even if you don't qualify for zero-deductible coverage, windshield replacement is often more affordable than people expect. See our pricing for cash customers →
