How Long Does Windshield Replacement Take?

About 60-90 minutes for the installation itself, plus 30-60 minutes for the adhesive to cure enough for safe driving. If your vehicle needs ADAS calibration, add another 30-45 minutes. Most customers are back on the road in 2-3 hours total.

Will Insurance Cover My Windshield?

If you have comprehensive coverage and your vehicle is registered in South Carolina, yes — and with no deductible. SC law (SC Code 38-77-280) provides for zero-deductible windshield replacement on qualifying SC-plated policies. Read more about the SC zero-deductible law.

The Vocabulary You'll Meet in These Guides

Most of the confusing words in auto glass are not marketing terms — they are defined, in writing, in the American National Standard that covers replacement work: ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022, published by the Auto Glass Safety Council. Knowing the definitions makes the guides below easier to read and makes an estimate easier to question. These are the standard's own words.

About the Adhesive

  • Minimum drive-away time — “the time necessary for a given adhesive system to attain minimum drive-away strength after an adhesive bonded glass part is set in place.” It is a property of the adhesive and the conditions on the day, not a fixed number.
  • Minimum drive-away strength — the minimum properties specified by the adhesive manufacturer to meet the federal requirements (FMVSS 208 and 212) as they apply to glass retention.
  • Retention system — “any original equipment or equivalent method of glazing attachment.” The glass is a structural part; the adhesive is what makes it one.
  • Full cut — removing the existing bead of urethane down to roughly 1–2 mm where the residual bead is sound. The standard says only the full cut method should be used with polyurethane systems.

About the Cameras

  • Calibration — “the process by which a new Advanced Driver Assistance System component is calibrated to the manufacturer's specifications (such as when a new camera is installed).”
  • Recalibration — “the process by which a vehicle's Advanced Driver Assistance System is returned to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.”
  • Static — calibration “undertaken on a stationary vehicle in a controlled environment,” using targets at set distances.
  • Dynamic — calibration “that takes place while a vehicle is driven and exposed to roadway conditions specified by the vehicle manufacturer (e.g. speed, lane markings, traffic signs, etc.).” Some vehicles require one, some the other, some both — it is the manufacturer's call, not the shop's.

About the Glass

  • OE and OEM — original equipment, and original equipment manufacturer. The standard distinguishes the two, and so should an estimate.
  • The markings on the pane — replacement glass must meet ANSI Z26.1 as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205, and the standard requires that every glass part be traceable to the job “by a DOT number and part number.” Those markings are printed in the corner of the glass, and you can read them yourself after the work is done.
  • Scope — the standard covers replacement on vehicles falling within Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 212 and 208, which is to say ordinary road cars.
